College Scholarships and Grants: paying for tuition

Everyone knows the importance of a good higher education. Whether you want to be a doctor, a lawyer, an accountant, or something important in life, you need a degree. But the ugly truth is that not everyone can afford the cost of tuition; that's when college scholarships and grants come in. The most important universities, such as the Ivy League ones, charge sky-high fees to their students. So, it is very important to know whether your prospective school offers college scholarships and grants.

College scholarships and grants are basically the same thing. The first is a financial aid package that allows a student to gain access to further education. Within college scholarships and grants, a grant is free education money given to a student.

The good thing about college scholarships and grants as opposed to loans is that the first do not have to be paid back; whereas loans do. In general, college scholarships and grants are awarded on the basis of different criteria that the grantee has to meet. For example, there are merit-based awards that are granted according to academic performance; and need-based awards, granted when the student cannot truly pay for education.
